Reading Lists for College-Bound Students

by Doug Estell, Michele Satchwell, and Patricia Wright

ISBN:  0764561014 (softcover)

NOTE: This review is of the second edition.

The subtitle to this book is:  Get a Head Start on College Success!  I couldn't agree more.  This book suggests reading now--while you're in high school--books that you may have to read when you're in college.  And if you end up reading some that you don't have to read in college, there's no harm done--you're just a more well-rounded individual.

The book begins by telling you why you need this book; this covers just a few pages, but it makes a very sound argument for reading prior to getting to college.  Next a "Personal Reading List" is introduced along with instructions on how to make your own.  A discussion of what to look for while you're reading and a "Reading Diary" finish up the introductory section.

The reading list section makes up 245 pages of the 262 pages in the book.  The lists are obviously the lion's share of the book.  There's a handy, short list of the top 100 books recommended by the colleges that were contacted for the writing of this book.  What follows are the recommended reading lists from about 100 colleges.  Such colleges as the Universities of Alabama, Delaware, Florida Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Rochester, Tulsa, Hillsdale College, Hawaii Pacific College, George Washington University, DePaul, Princeton, St. John's in both Annapolis and Santa Fe, Swarthmore, Loyola, Marquette, Mount Holyoke, Oral Roberts, BYU, Amherst, and Cornell are just a few of the colleges that submitted reading lists to the authors of this book.  I found the little extra bits of info that some of the colleges sent about their reading lists to be interesting.

This is a handy little reference book.  With an annotated list of the 100 books most often recommended by colleges, a guide to setting up your own reading program and reading diary, and actual suggested reading lists from over 100 colleges nationwide--you've got everything you need to get a head start on college.  This book is the book that will show you how and what to read (now while you're still in high school) to lighten your workload and stress level when you do get to college in a few years.
