Now this is not a textbook, so why would you want to use it? Well, the purpose of having science as a school subject is to learn things like how this world works. This book makes learning easy and fun. Even if you already have a textbook for science, you could use the chapters in this book to introduce topics in the textbook. There is something to be said for not needing to use a book written like Bill's is--you know, kind of in a "cool" style that appeals to the kids, that's written in everyday language. But if the kids can use a book that makes understanding the science concept simple, then with that knowledge they can more easily go on to the upper level books. Bill Nye's book can help lay a foundation for further studies. Now, this book doesn't cover all there is to learn when it comes to science. Here's the chapter titles so that you can see what is covered in the book: The Road to Knowledge (the scientific method, induction/deduction, etc.) Matter (solids, liquids, gases, atoms, and molecules, protons, etc.) The Four Fundamental Forces (gravity, electromagnetism, etc.) Heat (laws of thermodynamics, absolute zero, moving heat, etc.) Light (mirrors, lenses, lasers, etc.) Electricity & Magnetism (setting up force fields, compasses, etc) Radio, TV & More (HDTV, movies, microwaves, etc.) Weather (how air sloshes around our planet, ozone layer, etc.) Outer Space (stars, momentum, Eratosthenes, etc.) There's plenty of experiments to go along with the topics--about 25. They use stuff like most science experiments do--it's easy to get a hold of, but not all of it may be at home. One thing that you should be aware of though is that the book builds on itself. Bill will sometimes refer to a topic covered in an earlier chapter in a later chapter. Any real drawbacks haven't left much of an impression on me. What has left an impression, though, is the readability and understandability. Bill Nye has a real knack for being able to make science interesting and fun for science novices and phobics.
