This was one of the very first homeschooling books that I read -- along with a few of John Holt's books. I read it under its former title of Home School Burnout or something like that. I'm glad they changed the name. Home School Burnout sounds like a book for someone having trouble with homeschooling, while The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook much more describes the book. It's very much a handbook for low-stress homeschooling--helpful for beginners as well as those a little burnt out by homeschooling.
When I was trying to figure out how to homeschool, this book gave me a lot of confidence. It addresses issues such as socialization, what type of curriculum to choose, how to plan the school day, etc. It was an article written by the Moores that convinced me to homeschool. Their view that a child is best socialized in the family really impressed me. The Moores really have a lot to say and say it well in this book.
While I don't totally agree with delayed academics, which is the Moore's approach, I surely still consider this book to be a classic and helpful book. I enjoy picking it up now and then and reading a chapter here or there. The stories are encouraging and empowering. I still use their planning/record keeping idea (with a few adjustments) even though I read this book back in 1992. I'm sure I wouldn't have started our homeschooling adventure with unit studies if I hadn't read The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook.
So, as you can see, The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook covers a broad range of homeschooling topics. I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about homeschooling!!!
