Both of the books by the Colfaxes are very interesting. Hard Times in Paradise, while not appearing to be a homeschooling book, tells the story of their lives while living on their wooded land in California. Written from memory and their journals, it recounts the leaving of the academic community, travel to Africa, purchase of some land on a hill, life without electricity or water, adoption, how the three oldest boys all learned to read at the same time, their struggle to make money, trying to fit in, the boys and their goats, building a guest house, acceptance to Harvard, and more. I recommend this as a homeschooling book because it's a real-life example of how homeschooling works--even in the not-so-best of conditions. It's not the typical homeschooling story, but then, what is "typical homeschooling?"
It appears that this book is out of stock at Amazon.com which is too bad. But check for this book at your library or possibly try interlibrary loan. It's worth it. And if you click over to Amazon.com, you'll be able to read another review of this book.

Check for a *used* copy at Powell's. The last time I checked they had three available!
