Ruth Beechick, a retired teacher with years of experience, knocks down some cherished beliefs when she describes how simple the process of a child learning to read can be. She bolsters us up with confidence AND she gives us the tools to accomplish the task--written simply, with no flash or glitz. 

Ruth Beechick tells us what's important when it comes to reading then she gives us about 25 activities--fun little games--to make learning fun. In the simplest of terms, she tells us how to know if our child is ready to learn to read. She tells us that expensive materials are unnecessary, that once blending is learned that it's all down hill from there, that all too many folks try to skip important steps and how to avoid that, and she gives us a way to decide if your child's reading book is the right reading level for your child and two phonics charts are also included. I can't think of anything she's left out. 

I'm really glad that these were recommended to me back at one of my first home school support group meetings. I lend my set out now and again and hear many positive comments. I think this little booklet lays a good foundation, really grounds a parent in the basics of teaching a child how to read.
