I enjoyed reading this "horse" book. My experience with horse books doesn't progress beyond the "Billy and Blaze" genre, so I wasn't sure I'd like it. It was recommended on the home-ed listserve. I was not sorry that I heeded that recommendation. Basically, it's a story about Monty Roberts and his way of "breaking" horses. He watched herds of wild horses when he was younger and applied what he learned from watching them to his care and training of his own horses. There's also a lot of information about his childhood and horse experiences. What I particularly appreciated about the book was how what Monty Roberts knew about horses could be applied to training children. It seemed to contrast how Monty's father treated Monty as a child with how horses respond to good treatment. Maybe I'm reading things into the story. But that's what I saw. Of course, though, as a home educator, I was probably "looking" for this type of info. And we all know that Pollyanna says that we find what we're looking for! Anyway, I liked reading the book! Hope to read it again soon! It made me want to get a horse!!! UPDATE: October, 1999: My husband bought a young horse.
