I found this book by accident at a local used book store and brought it home. As I read the back cover, I decided that it sounded good. The cover said that it was one of Farley Mowat's funniest books about a boy and two owls that he rescued named Wol and Weeps. So at bedtime, I started reading this book to my two kids. They loved it! I've never had them say half way through the book, "Mom, will you read this to us again when you're done." I was startled by their response to this book. But then, this is a very amusing book. Here's the storyline: The main character and his friends have a small menagerie of prairie dogs and snakes and decide that they want some owls. They make a few abortive attempts at hunting for owls on the Saskatchewan prairie. After a storm, though, they find an abandoned owlet. And soon afterward they find another orphaned owl that some bullies are dropping rocks on! So two owls are added to the menagerie. The story is a hoot. It tells how Wol keeps the family dog in line. The story about the parade the boys entered is very entertaining. They dress up their owls and bring their *surprise* pet to the pet parade and try to win first prize. The ensuing ruckus is a treat. We also get to hear about the family's trip to the lake and how Wol deals with the crows. Farley Mowat really knows how to draw in the reader. You begin
to like the characters and you really want to meet Wol and Weeps!
My 10 year old and 8 year old both begged for me to read more the morning
after hearing two chapters the night before. Usually my kids only
want to hear *modern* books, but this one was a big hit.
