Okay, so whenever I've tried to look for constellations, I always wonder
things like: "Okay, so why are the two bears up in the sky?
Why? And by the way, I can't tell how they're supposed to be bears!
It's just stars sorta clumped together. And why bears? Why
not elk?" This book tells the stories behind the constellations and
has helpful outline pictures of what the constellations are supposed to
be depicting. A little more background like this makes star gazing
more interesting to me--even though it doesn't answer all my questions.
This book is great for the novice with plenty of star maps and illustrations.
One of the reviews at Amazon.com says, "Written for the non-specialist
and widely respected by professional planetarians...." See for yourself

| A related item that looks like an effective tool is The
Box of Stars : A Practical Guide to the Night Sky and to Its Myths and
Legends (a book, cards and maps all in a boxed set). Amazon.com
says, "For everyone who has gazed at the heavens and tried to pick out
the constellations, each image on these colorful, oversized cards is pierced
with tiny holes along the pattern of the constellation as it appears in
the night sky...." Sounds like fun!
