There are quite a number of books about Mary Jemison.  We didn't actually read Indian Captive:  The Story of Mary Jemison.  The version that we read is Mary Jemison Indian Captive published by Scholastic.  We read it aloud in just three days!  It is an interesting story.  However, it's out of print, so I'm recommending this version.

Basically this true story is about Mary Jemison, who at age fifteen, is captured, with some of her family, by Indians during the French and Indian War.  She is adopted into one of the families in the tribe to replace a young brave who had died.  She learns the Indian ways and comes to care for her new family.  She does consider escaping and almost does at one point.  However, she decides to stay.  She grows to see that these Indians are not so unlike her own people.  In time, she marries a brave and has one child.  Her husband dies, and she remarries and goes on to to lead a rich and fulfilling life as a member of her Indian family.

The story reminds me somewhat of Follow the River.  However, the main character in Follow the River escapes her captors.  She is driven to be reunited with her husband.  Both of these books depict strong women; however, these two women made different choices for different reasons.

You could try to find any of the following versions of the Mary Jemison story at your library:

The version that we read is no longer being printed and doesn't appear to be available from Powell's, but might possibly be in your local library.  Its title is Mary Jemison Indian Captive or Mary Jemison Seneca Captive by Jeanne Lemonnier Gardner.

The version pictured above is the Newbery Honor version.

Mary Jemison:  White Woman of the Seneca is another version.  It has been approved by the Seneca Nation.  It's for ages 9 and up.  I think that this is the version we would read aloud if we didn't already have the version that we have.

There are plenty of other books about Mary Jemison some in print and some out of print.  Some links are below.
